About me

Hello,
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Nationally Certified Counselor, Professional Teaching and Standards Board certified K-12 counselor with 19 years of experience. In addition to working with teenagers, I provide individual, couples, and marriage and family therapy. I work with a wide range of issues ranging from anxiety, depression, anger management, grief, transitions, DSM disorders and beyond. I use a Solution Focused approach in counseling; this is based in cognitive-behavioral ideology. I also use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This means that I will share any idea, theory, model, philosophy or life experience that will support the client's growth and development in counseling. I mix counseling and education to help clients understand what may be going on in their lives and let them decide what they want to do about it.

My counseling style is warm, interactive, and direct. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs. I also encourage educational tools for clients to learn about and understand the issues they may be struggling with.

In working with minors, I use discussion (as described above), athletics (as appropriate) and role modeling to help youth decide for themselves their values, needs, wants and hopes. I am aware that families vary greatly in these areas and I will keep in mind and respect parental preferences when working with youth. I do request to meet with a parent or legal guardian prior to the counseling sessions starting with the minor client.

Congratulations, it takes courage to seek for a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. If you are ready to take that step I am here to support and empower you.

I look forward to working with you!

Shawnna is awesome! I am so happy that we matched and we have been able to work through so many things in a short month. I plan to continue working with her and her knowledge and expertise have been such an amazing help to me. She is a great listener and really helps you look at situations from all angles and will tell you what you need to hear no matter what.
