About me
I am licensed in Virginia with 3 years of professional work experience. I am not your traditional counselor—I come to this as a Neurodivergent with a learning disability (dysgraphia. I am also before I am anything else a Wife, Mom and grandmother. So, I bring both clinical and lived experience to the therapeutic space. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. No single approach works for everyone, every time. Instead, I encourage clients to explore what works for them personally. I emphasize that change is a shared process—50% of it is your buy-in, your belief in what you're doing. Just because a technique is proven doesn’t mean it will resonate with every person. I’m not the kind of provider who believes people should be in therapy forever. I believe in building autonomy. Our thoughts influence our feelings, which then shape our behavior—but ultimately, we are each responsible for the choices we make. At any moment, we're only one decision away from a completely different life. The most powerful thing we possess is the ability to choose our attitude in any situation. Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond. In every challenge, we have three choices: let it destroy us, define us, or inspire us to thrive in spite of it.have experience in helping clients with stress, anxiety, parenting issues, motivation, self esteem, & confidence. I also have experience working with coping with life changes. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process.

Reviews
These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Shannon Shackford. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with Teen Counseling might be different.
I appreciate her willing to hear us out and also contribute to the conversation providing helpful awareness.
Shannon is a great listener. She is especially good with neuro-spicy clients and mothers of neuro-spicy children. She is patient and relatable. Not every therapist is for everyone, but Shannon's approach works for me. Thanks, Shannon!
