About me
Hello! My name is Sarah May and I am a Licensed Practicing Counselor in the state of Virginia. I have been providing services in the mental health/behavioral health field since 2003. While I have provided services to both adults and adolescence, my primary experience has been with youth and adolescence. I have provided direct services in an office setting, in the home, school based, and community to teens and their families. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused, and Person centered styles but also approach services with Trauma Informed Care as needed.
I find it a true privilege to provide therapy services to teens and their families. My style is warm yet honest. I approach every session to listen to understand instead of listening to respond. Seeking Counseling services can feel overwhelming and possibly scary! I am here to help this process seem less scary and assist you and your family in creating goals and achieving them.
I look forward to hearing from you!

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Sarah May. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with Teen Counseling might be different.
Sarah is an incredibly thoughtful, insightful, caring, and intelligent counselor. She makes me feel heard and understood, and even when she doesn’t initially understand something, she goes above and beyond to figure it out. I have had several therapist before her that I connected with, but Sarah is the first that I feel that I can truly share anything with and receive non-judgmental and insightful feedback from her.
She’s given me a whole toolbox of coping skills that we’ve worked to tailor to my specific needs and she’s made me feel confident in my ability to independently manage my own mental health once I’m in a place to step away from actively seeing a counselor.
Sarah May is kind, understanding and insightful. Her patience and expertise has helped me learn so much about myself. I am forever grateful for her help.
Sarah was the second counselor I was matched with after requesting a switch from the first. Immediately I felt at ease with her. She walked me through a very dark time in my life and helped me make sense of my emotions. I’m convinced I wouldn’t have progressed as quickly as I did without Sarah’s help.
Sarah is great and the best therapist I’ve had on teencounseling.com.
Sarah has been awesome. I stopped counseling a couple months ago and recently started again. I have confidence she will be just as helpful this go around.
I really like how Sarah replies back and how she listens to what I’m saying! I don’t get to write a lot of times but when I do, she replies in a timely manner!
She’s great!!
Sarah has been so instrumental to walking along side my teen and working with both of us to understand one another better. Sarah’s reliability, warmth and kindness has been a gift to us during this particularly complex season. We are very grateful for her expertise and advice as we navigate life. I love the convenience of online counseling, it works so well for our whole family.
Sarah has been extremely insightful, attentive, helpful, knowledgeable, inquisitive and all around just an absolute model of what a counselor should be. She really listened to our problems and asked us many questions to understand the situation before sharing her thoughts and insight. You can tell Sarah truly cares about her clients, and also has the requisite expertise to guide couples towards reconciliation and a deeper understanding of one another (because my significant other and I definitely feel this way now after our sessions with Sarah). Highly recommend!
Sarah was always kind and respectful and helped me find ways to think about things and open up whether it was through chat or through worksheets she was able to send me. It was nice to have a constant person to talk to who I thought was a great fit for me.
Sarah May has completely changed my idea of therapy and 110% cares about her patients. It's obvious that she wants to help in any way she can and checks in with me very often, especially when she hasn't heard from me in a while. I would recommend her to everyone I know if she had the capacity to take on the world.
She's great and very understanding towards my partner and I.
Sarah May is as attentive a person as anyone could ask for, she ensures that she listens to the concerns and then works on ways to address those concerns. She always check in to make sure everything is fine and that nothing keeps you down.
Sarah is so amazing. She has really been able to help us and me personally
Sarah May has been so helpful to my husband and I during a very difficult time. Having sessions with her each week and having conversations when we need it has been very critical for us. We end the sessions feeling better than when we began and that isn't how we usually feel after leaving the office of a counselor. She has practical advice and is really good at showing us how to be a team in our conversations and decisions. I would highly recommend her.
She has eased my mind in many ways, as well as validated some of my my emotions. Every session ends with me feeling better about things then yesterday. And she responds to my post every time I go to check.
