I then received my Master of Arts and Doctorate in Rehabilitation Counselor Education from Michigan State University. I worked at The University of Michigan Health System as a rehabilitation counselor and independent living specialist and then as Director of the Autism Spectrum Disorders Program at Oakland University. I have been on faculty at Oakland University since 2009 and presently serve as Chair for the Department of Human Development and Child Studies in the School of Education and Human Services .

I have experience successfully treating trauma, anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorders, psychosocial adaptation to disability, teen issues, life changes/adjustments, grief and loss, body image issues, life transitions, family issues, parenting skills, anger management, and human-animal interactions therapy. I am trained in mental health first aid for youth and instruct in the adult mental health first aid response programs.

Written on Nov 19, 2025 after therapy with Darlene for 3 weeks on issues concerning depression, stress, anxiety, addictions, lgbt, relationship issues, trauma and abuse, grief, sleeping disorders, self esteem, anger management, career difficulties, bipolar disorder, coping with life changes, compassion fatigue, and adhd

Dr. Groomes is my very first therapist in over 10 years, and my first interaction with online therapy as a whole. Not only do I feel empowered to speak my mind, I feel confident that no matter how hard, confusing, or anxious about the topic I may be, she will be able to help guide me through it, and help me know how to handle it the next time. I'm very thankful teen counseling matched me with someone who's just as direct as I am, and after every session I feel so much lighter and ready to take on life.

Dr. Groomes is patient and understanding yet she is straight forward which I really appreciate. She helps you come to a decision on your own terms. She guides you with the knowledge that she has and it feels very casual talking to her as I have a hard time opening up to people. Dr. Groomes is easily the best therapist I've ever worked with. She is personable so that sessions do not feel clinical, and incredibly intelligent and experienced to provide thoughtful guidance, coaching, and support alongside it. It's a very relaxed approach and she's a great and kind human. She's super responsive on the few times I've reached out outside of session. I always look forward to our time where we can catch up on life and stay caught up on goals and progress.

Dr. Groomes is a wonderfully thoughtful therapist. She listens to my needs and concerns and is not afraid to share things that might not be easy to hear. She is very responsive when I have issues and I am often surprised at how she is able/willing to respond during what I would consider off hours. Overall, a very caring and concerned therapy provider with a huge toolbox of knowledge to share from. I am blessed to have her help.

Groomes is amazing. Shes the first therapist I’ve ever spoke too. She made me feel comfortable, to be honest, to be sincere, to be myself and dig deep. She’s upfront, bold, understanding and I’m lucky to have her as my first experience. Ive progressed, fell back, progressed again and she kept me on track even when I forgot myself. Solid stonewall I can rely on to be on my side.
