About me
Hello! My name is Joan E. Burgos, and I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor licensed to practice in the state of Iowa. For seven years, I have worked as a counselor for two major community mental health agencies in the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. At that time, I worked with teenagers experiencing a wide range of mental health issues, from depression to conduct disorder. I graduated with my MA in clinical psychology from the University of Tulsa in 2013. I have extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, and my own therapeutic style combines elements of each.
I've been passionate about psychology my entire life. As someone who has experienced serious mental health issues herself, I am intimately familiar with both sides of the therapeutic relationship. I have found it extremely beneficial to my practice to understand what it's like to sit in the client's chair, sharing a client's expectations for treatment. As a trans woman, it has been my pleasure to grow along with my local LGBT+ community. I have served as a volunteer counselor for an outdoor camp for LGBT+ youth, assisting teens with mental health issues and addressing crises that popped up during the trip. As a person of color, I have labored within my community to improve resource accessibility for other people of color, working most closely with the local Hispanic community.
When I'm not doing therapy, I am an avid gamer and writer. My favorite video games are role-playing games, followed immediately by first-person shooters. I write primarily urban fantasy and science fiction, and I enjoy immersing myself in psychological and philosophical readings. I have a BA from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, in both English and Philosophy. I look forward to meeting and working with your teen, helping them to discover and grow into the best version of themselves.

Reviews
These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Joan Burgos. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with Teen Counseling might be different.
Joan is so nice and doesn’t make me feel unworthy of help, they explain things and asks questions. Joan is a great therapist so far and I can’t wait to continue with them. :)
Great counselor
I’ve had one session with Joan and she has helped me understand myself so much more in that session than anyone has in 33 years. The ability to be completely vulnerable with zero judgement and feel like I’m just talking with a friend is so nice. We communicate through the messenger portion of the app and it’s amazing! I look forward to working with her and into growing into the beat version of myself.
Joan is a thoughtful insightful therapist who allowed me to address my issues with honesty and objectivity. I highly recommend her!
Joan has been a great listener and proactive in her counseling approach.
In 5 minutes i got more help from her than i did with 5 months of other doctors
Honestly, I absolutely love how helpful she is. She helped me feel very comfortable very quickly, which has never happened to me before and I have been through a LOT of therapy. I felt she addressed my situation with haste and we jumped head first into my trauma and it wasn't as scary as anticipated! I think she is very good at what she does.
