I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Vanessa Black and I've been a counselor for the past five years. I have a Masters degree in clinical mental health counseling and about 15 years of experience working in the human services field, I completed my Master’s degree May, 2013 and have since attained additional certifications and or credentialing in Anger Management, Domestic Violence, Sex Offender Treatment, Child and Adolescent Trauma, Clinical Addiction and Distance Counseling, I currently run my own practice called Words of Wisdom located in NC.. In my experience I've worked with diverse populations, consisting of children, adolescents, their families, young adults, couples and seniors in a variety of community-based professional and supportive roles. In a relatively short time I have had to adapt to dealing with individuals in almost every transition of life and while it was never my plan to specialize in any one particular population, actual practice seemed to necessitate such specialization. For both my internship and the following practicum's as well as my first year of practice, every client was a minor, little children with behavioral problems, older kids encountering social issues and new relationships, a lot of bullying, depression and anger and a lot of parental relational problems and interfamily turmoil. Some problems were easy to fix, there was simply a lack of communication, a fear of making a statement but most took time, it taught me to affectively work with and treat such young individuals, you had to find their level, their space and work within it.
I have found there was never just one approach that works best. As such I believe it is best to use an integrative approach to treatment which combines different theories and different techniques which varies depending on personality and the particular problems brought forward, this is even more apparent when dealing with children and teens as their trust often seemed tied to evidence or success, they want to apply what you say immediately and see it work and because of this, you often have to utilize focused intervention strategies to defuse or mitigate imminent problem while simultaneously introducing deeper cognitive and or emotional frameworks to address the underlying issues. All the while tailoring treatment to the needs of each individual client and avoiding the hazards of labeling and stigma and instilling the understanding that therapy by its very nature calls for a very active effort and to be truly effective, you will have to work on things both during sessions and outside of them.
Ultimately therapy involves a large commitment of time and energy, it can often be frustrating or even uncomfortable, yet there are benefits for people who go through it. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems and significant reductions in feelings of distress, but there are no guarantees. It is important that you and I or any other therapist you choose, work together during the entire process and both agree on a plan and adhere to it, because successful therapy relies on this cooperative and evolving relationship, you should always be careful about the therapist you choose, you must feel free to express your concerns and voice your opinions. If you feel we could work together then I look forward to hearing from you and thank you in advance for allowing me to assist you through this process.

Vanessa was very helpful and I'm glad she was my counselor.
Vanessa has helped me change my life in so many positive ways. She's open minded, understanding and really works with you to find a method that works FOR YOU! She is amazing! I'd recommend her to EVERYONE!
Vanessa is the utmost professional. She is very knowledgeable, understanding, empathetic, but still tough enough to say what needs to be said. She is awesome, and I would recommend 10/10.
Vanessa is a fantastic, professional and supportive counselor. She listens and gets down to soul of the issues. She provides helpful worksheets and books to coincide with the work being done in sessions. She makes sure to concentrate on the big picture and to help you keep your eye on the goal.
Vanessa is AMAZING!! I’ve been with her now for a few months and she really has helped me stay grounded and focused on my next step in life. She is super sweet and goes out of her way to help me in every possible way. I seriously don’t know how she does it but if I start feeling like I’m falling apart I can talk to her and she always gets me right back on track. I think I’ve said something similar to this in a previous review but I think of her more as a friend than I do, “just my counselor.” She will never be “just” my therapist because she values me and my opinions on such a high level. She is so kind and caring and is always concerned about me and my wellbeing and for me that’s huge, I mean that’s something that gives me validation in a world where I had none! I just love her to pieces!!!
Vanessa has been a great source of comfort for me during troubling times. I have always found her insightful and caring. She offers valuable advice and addresses my concerns. I enjoy working with her greatly. She does an excellent job at listening to me and offering solutions. I would recommend her to anyone.
Vanessa is always understanding and there for you, never judgmental and tries her hardest to figure out a plan of action to tackle life's problems. She goes out of her way to make you see all the possible paths you could take when dealing with life and changes. She’s awesome!
Vanessa has been the best counselor I've ever had the privilege to work with. I highly recommend her.
Vanessa is very caring and intelligent! She’s insightful and really thinks about my well being. She gives me many options to try and listens to me.
Vanessa has been a wonderful help to me during a rather frustrating and worrisome time in my life. I have found that her guidance and general outlook on life is quite in tune with my needs. There's no better feeling than that!
She is very responsive and takes a lot of time to work with me.
I have used teen counseling and TeenCounseling apps for a while now. I have not had any success with the counselors I've been paired with so this time I did research. Vanessa's extensive credentials made her my choice. After spending just a few sessions with her I see how incredible she truly is and highly recommend her above any other counselor. 5-Stars. I'm glad I have found her.
Vanessa is personable and super down to earth. She goes out of her way to make you feel extremely comfortable and allows you to advise her if she’s pushing you too hard. I appreciate Vanessa and I’m grateful for having her.
Vanessa is very professional and also great about getting straight to the point. She is a very supportive counselor, and I would highly recommend her.
Vanessa was great, she was very comforting to talk to when I needed her, she asked about my concerns and kept that at the forefront, she was exactly what I needed when I needed it.
Ms. Vanessa is a very kind as well as a supportive anchor that I feel I can trust. I have not tried therapy before but it has been a helpful experience with her thus far. She does an awesome job to console me and I can genuinely say she wants the best outcome for me. So, thank you.
Vanessa is a great counselor and has really helped me come to terms with troublesome thoughts I had prior to counseling. She really listens and can explain ways to cope effectively. I would 100% recommend her to others!
Vanessa has been wonderful at listening to my daughter and giving her an unbiased sounding board for her current situation. We are thankful that Vanessa has given us a pathway to help our daughter move forward and wish that the first counselor she saw could have been this in tune with our daughter. I would highly recommend letting your child work with Vanessa.
