Sarah Clausen

About Me name is Sarah and I look forward to working with you. I am a Washington state licensed mental health therapist and a state designated children's' mental health therapist meaning I have extensive training and experience treating kids and teens. My graduate degree is in clinical psychology with a specialization in marriage and family therapy from Saybrook University and I have over ten years of experience in providing clinical services. The teen years can be stressful and overwhelming. They can be a hard time for kids and their families. Sometimes relationships which felt strong begin to feel taxed as teens begin the process of becoming more independent; this can be stressful for all involved. This is also an exciting time for kids! Teens are beginning to think about life after high school, learning important life lessons and increasing their independence. Sometimes it's hard for teens to talk with parents or other adults and an outsider perspective can be really helpful. Therapy can also help with family issues as it gives kids a chance to talk with someone outside the family who can offer professional help in building skills to improve relationships. My goal is to be able to help teens become stronger, more resilient, happier and gain skills they can use for the rest of their lives.

When working with teens, I use an direct and authentic approach. I am good at building relationships with my clients and typically easily connect with teens. I have worked in multiple school settings over the last five years with school aged kids. This experience has given me an understanding of just about any and every mental and emotional health issue faced by teens. I have worked with kids who self-harm, experience suicidal thoughts, who have trauma in their past, who use drugs and alcohol, who struggle with communication, who have depression and/or are anxious, who have eating disorder, low self-esteem, anxiety associated with graduating high school, who struggle with anger and need skills to better express themselves, who feel trapped by social media, who are exploring gender and sexual orientation issues, to name a few. My therapeutic approach is to support teens where they are at and work from there so that each teen I work with feels supported and good about themselves.

Sarah has been wonderful. She can read my messages and respond in a way that helps me cope. Phone sessions have been great as well as messaging.

Our counselor has been quick to respond to messages and very positive and uplifting to my teen. She has helped him understand that talking to someone isn't bad or a weakness and he feels more supported.
