About Me

Starting my career as a classroom teacher in San Francisco in 1997, I focused on building strong relationships with my students and their families. After seven years of teaching in public schools, I attended graduate school at SF State for my Master of Social Work After receiving my MSW in 2007, I returned to public schools as a support to students and their families in grades K-12. As a school social worker, I offered individual therapeutic and crisis counseling as well as a variety of other clinical roles including parent/teacher consultation & workshops; classroom and school-wide behavior intervention and planning; social-emotional group counseling, as well as clinical and site supervision of mental health practitioners. I completed the licensing process in 2010 [LCSW61731].

My area of concentration is supporting young people (aged 8-27) and their families who are managing any of the following:

social issues (peer pressure, aggression, isolation, victimization)

anger, sadness & depression

stress & anxiety

learning differences & difficulties

grief & loss

divorce & separation

substance use

self-harm

career & education decision making

adjustment to a new life situation

I use a combination of modalities, tailoring my approach to each individual. I use mindfulness and other relaxation practices in my counseling practice, as well as traditional talk-therapy. I rely heavily on cognitive-behavioral therapy tools and hold a solution-oriented perspective. Together, with my client, we begin by understanding present realities and then proceed to goal-setting. I often assign "homework" as a way to put into practice the skills we use in counseling and support greater accountability of my clients.

Above all, I respect a client's motivation to change and am deliberate about setting goals with their full-agreement and collaboration.

Kate was an excellent counselor for my teenage daughter who was experiencing some anxiety symptoms. Kate taught her some strategies and in just a few weeks, my daughter was feeling much better and more confident.

Kate goes above and beyond to help me understand myself and remind myself of all of my goals. She has a vast range of empathy and she has offered me the best support in some of the worst times. I feel like I have hope again and through her counseling I really feel like my mental health is improving.
