About me

Hi,

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have been licensed for almost 20 years and have over 30 years working in the mental health field. My experience ranges from working on inpatient psychiatric units, in crisis counseling programs as well as doing individual and family therapy. I have extensive experience working with teens who suffer from anxiety and depression, and high functioning autism spectrum issues. I use a person centered, strengths based and goal oriented approach. I also use personality typology tools to help teens better understand themselves and build confidence.

My specialty with teens is working with Highly Sensitive People and High Functioning Autism Spectrum teens and young adults. If you wonder if your teen is a Highly Sensitive person, I recommend Googling Highly Sensitive People self test. Frequently teens who are highly sensitive people, or who are on the autism spectrum, struggle with coping with the stress and chaos of the world. I can help with developing positive and effective strategies to manage emotional reactions and help reduce acting out emotionally and replacing that with confident and positive communication.

I am most effective with teens who are struggling with above stated issues, LGBTQ issues, or adjusting to changing life situations. I admit, I have no experience with working with oppositional defiant teens or teens with conduct disorders. I encourage you to look for a different therapist if you have a teen that needs help with severe behavioral problems that includes violence toward authority.

If you feel your teen would benefit from a warm, empathetic and emotionally validating therapist to help build confidence, overcome depression or anxiety, cope with challenges of being an LGBTQ youth, or build skills and insight to live positively with high functioning autism or being a Highly Sensitive Person, I might be the perfect therapist for your teen and would love to work with you and them!

-Julie

Julie is absolutely wonderful at the work she does. She is thorough, diligent, straightforward, and tactful. There is no way to verbalize all of the positives she has brought to my life as she teaches me to see the goodness within myself. When I think back to my circumstances when I entered therapy and compare with my circumstances now, the changes are just absolutely astounding. She is a great therapist and I would recommend her to anybody.

My counseling experience with Julie has changed my life for the better! Mainly, it is a huge relief and really has helped build my self-esteem to have a secure relationship with someone where I am allowed to be the very worst version of myself and she still cares about me and respects me. She never makes me feel ashamed or rejected if I'm not where I would like to be, which allows me to feel comfortable enough to push myself toward change when I'm ready. Through our relationship, I have accepted and learned to even celebrate parts of myself that I spent years trying to change/hide. It is so liberating! I wish everyone had experiences like this with therapists, but it can be hard to find someone who is a good match like I feel like Julie has been for me. I really value that Julie is able to treat me with unconditional positive regard and our connection feels very genuine and reciprocal, which gives it meaning for me. I wouldn't have liked a therapist who was more "directive" or "top-down," always guiding me on what to do and discuss next as we work to fix my problems. Julie helps steer when I'm wandering blindly in the desert, but she mainly lets me be in the driver's seat, which I really respect and appreciate. Thank you for all you do, Julie.

Julie has been such a powerful and supportive voice in my journey through alcoholism, depression and shame. She is so validating and listens to my issues without giving me tons of advice or short term "fixes" to my problems.
I believe that anyone who has issues like mine or is an HSP would greatly benefit from her kind and validating approach. She also gives me a whole hour of counseling, where other teen counseling therapists cut my time short or were always late.

So far, Julie and I have had four video therapy sessions together. I am so grateful to have her as my therapist. Julie is a wonderful listener and is helping me immensely in my search to find greater compassion/love/forgiveness for myself. I find Julie to be very easy to relate to, and as a result, I find myself smiling and laughing during our sessions, which is very refreshing: therapy is necessary for me, but it doesn't have to be completely serious, it should be fun and enjoyable as well.

Julie is absolutely wonderful. Professionally speaking, she is always on time and starts the session focused and picks up where we left off the prior session. There is never an adjustment period needed. She creates a therapy plan that fits each individual client instead of basing every client on a single therapy method. Personally, she is so easy to talk to, truly pays attention, and pulls things out by asking questions in a very empathetic and curious way. She is an interactive therapist (which I LOVE) that doesn't just sit back and listen but engages in the journey with you. I can't say enough wonderful things about Julie, I recommend her to my own friends and family all the time!

Julie is an incredible counselor. They're intelligent and empathetic. They've helped me to understand my own thought processes and trauma processing and given thoughtful and impactful feedback during our sessions.

I've tried counseling a few times in the past and it was never a good fit. Julie is the first counselor I've encountered that hasn't made me feel like my traumas and problems are all self-inflicted or that simply changing a single habit will make things all better.

I feel very lucky to have found them.

Julie has been my counselor for a month or so now, but I’m a nursing student so my schedule is insanely busy and Julie has been so understanding about that. I have not felt an ounce of judgement from her about any issue- from the smallest to the biggest- and that is what everyone deserves in a counselor.

Written on Apr 22, 2020 after therapy with Julie for 5 months on issues concerning stress, anxiety, lgbt, relationship issues, family conflicts, trauma and abuse, intimacy-related issues, self esteem, and adhd

Julie is absolutely amazing! Almost every time we talk, I actually leave the conversation feeling positive, hopeful, and determined. Julie helped me find that by encouraging, supporting, and validating me, my parts, and my experiences. I still have a long way to go, and paying for therapy with no steady income is hard, but I am confident that she can help me learn to navigate and manage my C-PTSD/Complex trauma, and other comorbid disorder(s).
