I am a licensed mental health counselor with over 25 years experience in the social service and counseling field. Over the years, I have gravitated to a more holistic approach with mental health and love helping my clients have the power within themselves to find wisdom and resources to feel content and find a more peaceful way to respond to internal and external stressors in their lives. My favorite part of the counseling process is seeing that spark in someone after it had been lost or never present and then watching positive transformations happen as a result.
Teens between the ages of 13 and 19 are one of my favorite populations to work with as it is the biggest transitional phase during the human experience. It is the only time when a person will go from being a helpless infant to someone with adult physical and emotional attributes in such a short period of time. It can be a confusing time, but also a very empowering and liberating time period as teens explore who they are as a person and assess their identity as they enter their adult lives. When I work with teens under the age of 18, parents and guardians will also be very involved in the counseling sessions. I will meet with the parent or guardian before and after each session to share direction of treatment and concerns. I may also have family sessions or just meet with the parent or guardian alone at times if there is a need.
I use a client-centered approach where the focus is on helping my clients fully explore situations through active listening, reflective listening, empathy and related self-disclosure. I like to empower clients to find their answers within through mindfulness and cognitive behavioral approaches focused on tools for healing such as journal writing, relaxation breathing techniques, meditation and yoga. I'm also influenced by techniques used through brief solution-focused treatment, which gives clients a lot of encouragement and control over their own healing to help clients not feel dependent on me, but rather dependent on themselves and gain confidence about capabilities.
I had my own face-face private practice for 6 years where I provided all of the counseling services and office management independently and took a break for a few years to focus on homeschooling my children. My children are more independent now, so I‘m once again providing counseling services independently with the new societal guidelines of providing telehealth treatment. Along with counseling, I have a lot of experience with positive parenting skills, perinatal and postnatal emotional issues and homeschooling in case this is something that you feel overwhelmed by at the moment, I have both professional and personal experience with these. I am also in the process of obtaining my yoga certification to teach yoga and provide yoga therapy.
If you feel like I would be a good match for you, I would love to help you with your emotional and mental health concerns. I look forward to working with you!
