Joshua Opatowsky

(MSW, LCSW, CCATP)

About Me

My name is Joshua, and I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) currently working in the state of Maryland with 7 years of experience working with individuals in areas of case management, psychotherapy, mental health treatment, hospital discharge planning, and supportive care for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. I am licensed in both the state of Oklahoma and the state of California, which is where I first became licensed. I have worked with adults, teens, and children struggling with mental health and life concerns such as depression, anxiety, mania, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, as well as motivational and relationship difficulties. Included in the previous were individuals who have experienced lifelong trauma, abuse, and other adverse events that led them to working with me.

My therapeutic/counseling style is cooperative and client-driven. I want to make sure that all our sessions, messages, and interactions are as positive and cooperative as possible, working toward achieving your desired goal(s). I treat all people with dignity, respect, kindness, and openness while avoiding all judgment and stigmatization. I utilize cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavioral, and solution-focused approaches primarily with liberal use of psychoeducation as applicable. All of our work together will be specifically designed to meet your needs and whatever it is that you bring to the table in the moment.

I truly appreciate you reaching out for help. It takes courage and strength to take this first step, and it is my personal goal to help you see it through. If you feel this is the right time and place for you to make a change, I am here for you to assist in facilitating that, and I would love nothing more to be the guiding light through that process.

I look forward to being given the opportunity to work with you and to discover how to best assist you. Have a wonderful day!

Checks in every few days. Cares about me getting control of my anxiety. Is a great help.

I find myself lucky to have Joshua as my therapist. He is empathetic, patient and pays attention to his clients, makes them feel heard and always there to support in their lows (bad days) and cheers them for even the slightest highs (good days). Thank you Joshua for your constant support.

He's really nice, I like that he has ways for me to cope and he sounds like he listens and is actually taking in the information in ways I wouldn't be able to do myself.

I feel like Joshua really listens to me. The worksheets help organize my thoughts. He also encourages me to express myself by writing. Our first video appointment was good at putting a face to the person. He made it so easy for me to talk to him. I feel like I was matched up with just the right person! I would recommend him to anyone.

He’s the only counselor I’ve ever talked to that genuinely seems to care. He doesn’t make me feel like a burden or that I’m crazy or tries to push me off to someone else because I’m “too much” (which has happened before and it felt awful). I’ve never had a therapist I could vent to about anything and give me the space to spill my guts whether it’s my mental issues, relationship issues, or if I’m just venting about stuff. He’s the best and I feel extremely lucky because I’ve never had such a positive experience like this before.

Written by H.A. on Aug 04, 2019 after counseling with Joshua for 2 weeks on issues concerning stress, anxiety, relationship issues, compassion fatigue, and adhd

Very kind, not so stiff as a professional would typically be. Makes me feel like I'm talking with a old friend rather then a stuffy psychologist. Also very willing to help and encouraging good behavior and outlets.
