My name is Joel Downs. I graduated with a Master’s in Rehabilitation from Utah State University in 2015. I took additional classes so I could do clinical work and am currently licensed as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of Utah. I currently work as a substance abuse/mental health therapist at one of the state's health departments. I have 3 years of experience of helping clients work through and better manage a variety of disorders and problems such as: addictions, co-dependency, anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationship issues, sexual abuse, anger, self-esteem and family issues.
I also have around 10 years of personal experience dealing with someone close to me that has a substance use disorder. Some may not count that as valid experience that you could put down on something like this but I beg to differ. My clients and clients that I’ve taught in various groups have appreciated hearing my experiences and viewpoints as others and I have tried to help this individual get their life back on track. Clients have told me that they feel like they can open up to me more, relate to me more, and learn from me more than other counselors they've had in large part due to my personal experience but the other part that is just as important is my treatment approach.
I have seen what works for this person along with what doesn’t work. I know that I can’t base my treatment approach solely on my personal experience or even my educational experience. This is due to the fact that I know that one theory or approach that works for some will not work for everyone. However, I have learned what does seem to work for everyone and that is being treated like an individual that has worth and value which is very empowering to a client. I realize that people know themselves better than any other person or any theoretical book for that matter. That’s why with my approach I'm able to help my clients discover who they really are, who they want to be, and can be. Then I focus on empowering them to do what it takes to live and act on their values.
By using Person Centered Approach, ACT Therapy, and Solution-Focused Counseling I believe it has produced the greatest results in helping my clients move closer to the life that they want to be living. These types of counseling theories have helped my clients feel comfortable with therapy, focus on solutions rather than problems, and taught them how to raise their level of psychological flexibility. My biggest aim for most of my clients is helping them gain greater psychological flexibility which is the ability to adapt to a situation with awareness, openness, and focus and to take effective action, guided by their values!
I also have experience working with teens in the substance abuse field that often have dual diagnoses. Many have had issues with self-esteem, trauma, self-harming behaviors, oppositional defiance, anxiety, and depression just to name a few.
I have about 2 years of experience working with teens in middle schools and high schools as a substitute teacher as well. I also substitute taught for the LDS church’s seminary program for about 3 years and student taught seminary for two semesters. I mention this to show that I have worked with youth quite a bit and have received very positive feedback from the students, teachers, and supervisors about how well I related with them and as well as how I effectively taught them.
I am sure I can help your teen or teens that may be struggling through their teenage years as they try to fit in, figure out who they are, or may be dealing with to some form of addiction or self-harming behavior.

Joel is kind, energetic, and has met our needs. We highly recommend him.
Joel has really good ways to explain things whether it be in a short story or relating something to a line in a movie. I was pretty nervous about trying this "new age" / modern counseling through and app/video/phone calls, but it's been very good and I'm really happy with Joel. He's a really good genuine guy.
Joel is very down to earth and treats you like a person. He talks to you straight forward and tells you like it is. From our very first session I felt a sense of relief from the angst that was going on in my life at the time. It was such an impact that even my family noticed the change.
Through working with Joel, I have better been able to talk through my issues, not only during our conversations, but also in between appointments because he has provided me with different perspectives and problem-solving mechanisms that I can utilize to improve my own thought processes. Working with Joel has been, without hyperbole, life-changing for me.
Extremely conversational with a plethora of insightful quotes stored in his head. Shares a lot of content to help with understanding and makes you feel like helping you is a high priority in his life.
He helped me stick to my religious values and come out of the closet. He’s helping me with my other addictive behavior. Thanks Joel
Joel, you're an incredible human being and have helped me through so much. If anyone is looking for someone to talk to that is amazing at their job then Joel is the man for you. He has helped me through more than he will ever know. teen counseling has saved my life and made living day to day a lot easier. So thank you to Joel and teen counseling. :)
Joel is the best! Over the few months I have worked with him he has listened to my concerns and helped me solve my problems. I would work with him again in the future and would recommend him to everyone who needs help.
Joel is an amazing counselor. He listens, is empathetic and his advice is not just useful but also easy to understand and implement. He has already made a difference in my life and I’m looking forward to keep working with him!
Fairly new to teen counseling & working with Joel but he is great, leagues better than my previous in person counselor, who just let me talk & never offered any advice. Why? He is really trying to understand my issues & trying to help me with strategies to overcome these issues, responds quickly when not in session if I reach out via email b/c I am not doing well, which is so reassuring that I will be ok when someone immediately responds, he cares & for that, I a grateful & will keep him on my life line.
I've been working with Joel for possibly 4 months? He is phenomenal - 100% recommended.
I worked with Joel Downs on depression and anxiety issues. He was amazing at helping me harness my negative energy and refocus it on positive goals that I wanted to accomplish. I have not had a therapist yet who worked with me to accept the negative thoughts and feelings associated with anxiety, and then center my attention on something else. I think Joel is a very understanding therapist, and he is very easy to talk to. He is also available when you need him. I had a great experience with him and highly recommend!
Joel is direct and focused but he’s easy to talk to. He’s very personable and supportive.
Joel is a down to earth kind of guy, very relatable and easy to talk too.
Joel has been helping me through a lot. He is a very friendly guy who is very understanding. He takes the time to help me out and it's something I greatly appreciate.
Joel has really given me hope when I thought there was no hope. Joel is very caring and extremely smart. I’ve been to many counselors over many years but Joel by far is the best!
He’s phenomenal. Just within a few weeks I was able to gain more confidence and really put my life back together. Would recommend 10/10.
Joel has been excellent. Very personable and helpful. His focus is very much on the future. Not dwelling on the past and constantly rehashing things, but focused on the here and now. His approach of helping with today, by equipping me with the tools I need is invaluable. The short 2 months I've spent with him have been life changing.
He definitely has a different approach to counseling than I've ever experienced. I feel good after counseling instead of reliving past experiences over and over. I'm moving forward and starting to finally heal!
Joel has helped me so much in just the short time I have had him as a counselor! Thanks Joel
I have serious social anxiety, so I was worried about meeting and talking to a therapist. Within 5 minutes I felt comfortable talking to him, and was already looking forward to speaking with him again in the next appointment. He took time to listen, and his advice on the first day has already started to help me. He is a fantastic counselor and a nice guy in general.
Joel is amazing and really helped to keep me grounded while we were working together. He is a valuable member of my support team in life!
Joel is very intuitive and likable. I love how easy it is to talk to him and how well he is able to read between the lines to hear what I'm not expressing verbally.
Joel is incredibly kind and very patient with me and my scattered brain. He responded quickly to my messages and was more than willing to talk to me at times of the day when I needed help, that would normally be very inconvenient for other people. Even when my time was limited with our conversations, he patiently listened to my concerns, guided me to to extremely helpful resources, and had unique and encouraging advice that was specific to my needs. Joel is awesome!!
For lack of better words. He is genuine, he has become someone I can trust and appreciate. Joel always tries to relate and tell me what I can do. More than anything he listens.
