Jesse Marez

About Me

Hello and welcome to BetterHelp! My name is Jesse Marez and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licensed in the State of California since 2003. I earned my Master in Social Welfare degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1997 and have worked primarily in clinical settings as a social worker, therapist and a clinical supervisor. I know that your child is the most important and loved thing in your life and that his/her/their well-being and mental health is a serious issue of your greatest concern. First, let me say thank you for asking for help. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

Over the years of my practice, I have cultivated an ability to respond to my clients personally and individually while establishing therapeutic rapport by using motivational interviewing, client-centered therapy and Jungian and existential psychology. I draw upon my training and experience to ensure a safe and secure therapeutic space with room for creativity. For example, I like to pull in my knowledge of and passion for Jungian archetypes from Star Wars, Marvel, DC, anime and mythology which I have used to connect with and teach about relationships, anxiety, depression, family issues and bullying. It is your teenaged child who will help guide me in the approach that I take as we navigate their mental health needs.

I have worked with children and adolescents individually, in groups and with their families in a variety of settings, including an outpatient child therapy clinic, an adoptions agency and an in-patient psychiatric hospital. I have experience working across age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion and socioeconomic background. This provides me with the clinical and humanitarian touchstone for my practice. My clinical orientation is cognitive behavioral (CBT) and client-centered therapy with a specialty in Trauma-Focused CBT. I feel the strongest part of my therapy is something my supervisor told me during my licensure supervision. He said, “Jesse, before your clients care what you have to say, they have to know that you care.” He went on to say that he believed that I have a unique ability to let my clients know I care. As you are looking for the right fit for your teen’s needs, I want you to know that I take that advice to heart and use it in every encounter with my clients.

Jesse is a fantastic therapist and is helping my son develop strategies for dealing with anxiety. My son is always very energized and happy after their sessions and we have seen a marked improvement in his ability to cope with his emotions and stress. We are grateful to have been matched with Jesse!

My counselor Jesse had been amazing.. I'm dealing with trauma related anxiety and depression and he has made this pain I'm going through easier to understand and is giving me tools to cope and heal. I am so greatful for him
He listens and his style of communication and counseling help me feel more at ease .. it's much easier to open up and talk about really painful sensitive issues.

Jesse has been a wonderful counselor so far. I really feel seen and heard with the sessions I had with him. I've had other counselors/therapists before and in-person, however, I would say Jesse has made the most impact in regards to helping me find better coping mechanisms to help me with my anxiety. He responds quickly and conversations are very stimulating. I ended up having another family member sign up for teen counseling because of this wonderful experience I had. Thank you, Jesse!
