About Me

Hello, I am so glad you are here. I takes a brave person to ask for support, and I am here for you. I'm a passionate, results-oriented, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 24 years experience, who has worked enjoy working with all walks of life, experiences, and backgrounds. So far, my in-home and in-office work experience includes working with couples, individuals, at risk youth and families, and teens. I've worked with children "on the spectrum," violence in the home, addiction issues, non-traditional and blended family issues. I'm experienced in addressing past childhood and other interpersonal trauma issues.

My style is open, authentic, present, genuine, non-judgmental, honest, respectful, accepting, creative, and at times, playful. I am a humanist, a guardian of kindness, acceptance, empowerment and advocacy in my clinical work. I work with all walks of life, celebrate and promote inclusivity, while creating safe space for those who need to be seen and heard.

My "multi-lens" therapeutic approaches include Systems Theory, Strengths Perspective, Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I utilize a holistic approach to treatment, encouraging my clients to explore various relaxation techniques.

My role on your journey is to act simply as a supportive guide, to "meet you where you are at," explore options, empower and encourage you along your path. I believe in being present, authentic, and whole-hearted with my clients...creating a sense of "sitting at the kitchen table" effect, essentially the "therapist next door."

Personal growth is a process and I work towards a balanced approach to life with my clients. I'll help you explore and develop a "life compass" unique to you, including goal-setting, emotion exploration, cognitive skills strengthening, problem-solving, mood control, self-care, self-advocacy and coping skills. My goal for you is by the end of our time together, you will experience overall increased optimism and hope about your future and your abilities to manage life's challenges.

A few tid-bits about me, I'm the mother to two fun and playful children, ages 13 and 9, have been married to my husband for almost 20 years, and live in southwest VA. I enjoy reading, exercising and going on adventures with my family.

I've always loved people, so my passion is getting to do a job I love.

Thank you for your time. When you are ready to reach out, I'll be here.

Jenny is a fantastic counselor. She's a great listener, is supportive, and is willing to meet you where you are in a kind, nonjudgemental way. What more can you ask for from a therapist?

Excellent and caring counselor

Jenny Yates was my first counselor, and I was so skeptical talking to a therapist at first. But she made me super comfortable and knew just what to say to me. I had learned she was leaving and I was really sad but she just told me she is staying and I am super happy that I will have her support through these new troubles that lie ahead. I would give her a 7 out of 5 if I could!
