About me

For most of us, navigating parenthood while trying to manage daily life is hard work. If you have come here for relief and guidance for yourself and your teenager, then you have come to the right place. It often takes being in significant emotional pain before we are ready to reach out for help. Although your current life circumstances may feel overwhelming, it is important to know that you are not alone. With support for yourself and your child, you will get to the other side of whatever obstacles are in your way.

My name is Amy, and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Clinician who has been providing therapy to pre-teens and teenagers for over the last 21 years. I graduated from Loyola University in MD in 1999 with a Master's of Science degree in Counseling Psychology. I have worked with adolescents in a variety of settings including outpatient mental health clinics, school systems, residential treatment facilities and private practice.

I have an extensive history working with youth who vary in age, race, sexual orientation and who come from diverse backgrounds. The issues I have addressed over the last two decades include depression, anxiety, family conflict, trauma/abuse, addiction, adoption, divorce, death of a loved one, relationship issues, suicidal ideation, self-harming behaviors, self-esteem, autism, sexual orientation, gender identity confusion and parenting related issues.

As a clinician, I would describe myself as an expert when it comes to knowing how to connect with teenagers. I know how to build rapport quickly, which allows me to help teenagers get back on track sooner rather than later. I would describe myself as being strength based. I emphasize my client’s strengths in order to help them feel empowered and realize that they are completely capable of changing their unhealthy relationships with others and their self-destructive patterns.

The treatment modalities I primarily utilize are evidenced based, such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy. CBT provides a framework for this clinician to assist teenagers in challenging their negative thinking patterns through Cognitive Restructuring. It is my belief that if you can change your thinking, then you can change your life. l also utilize Motivational Interviewing techniques in order to provide teens with empathy and unconditional positive regard.

My approach is to assist teens in becoming increasingly self-aware as they learn more about who they are, what they desire in their lives and how to successfully achieve their goals. As a parent myself, I realize that our children often will shut us out, but will allow other trusting adults into their lives. I have a genuine understanding of the life challenges young people face day to day. Allow me to temporarily be your teenagers lighthouse in the storm, while we work together to reopen the lines of communication and re-establish connection between you and your child.

In my work, I strive to create a trusting, safe environment so that families can learn how to overcome their fears, express their emotions in a healthy way and learn to embrace the challenges in their lives as opportunities for self-discovery. In the end, every opportunity, whether good or bad, is a learning opportunity for personal growth.
